Communication report regarding the incidences of drought conditions in Poland
Year: 2011; period: 08 (11.VI - 10.VIII)
In the eighth reporting period, i.e. from 11 June to 10 August 2011 we can find no threat of agricultural drought conditions in Poland.
The values of climatic water balance (CWB) in large areas of the country are positive. Negative values, as in the seventh reporting period, occur only in the southern part of the Wielkopolskie voivodeship and the northern part of the Pomorskie voivodeship. By contrast, in Poland the value of CWB are much higher than the critical value.
Throughout the country recorded increases in the value of CWB since the fifth, sixth day reporting period. Compared to the period from 21 April-20 June 2011, when CWB values were the lowest, in the current reporting period the average value increased by as much as 166 mm. However, compared to the previous (seventh reporting period) the average CWB value increased by 13 mm. This means that in the subsequent sixty day period there is no deficit of water for crops, while there is a problem of excess water.
This year's June was warm. The warmest area from 18 to 19°C, was in the central belt of Poland. To the south and north of the belt the air temperature was lower at 17-18°C in the south and 16-17°C in the north. In the Dolnośląskie and Wielkopolskie voivodeships and mid Mazowsze the air temperature was higher than the long-term average (1971-2000) by 2-2.5 °C, and at the Coastland and foothills of the Carpathian by 1.5°C.
In July, the air temperature varied. The coldest was in the western and south-western parts of the country (16-17.5°C), while the warmest was in the eastern parts of Poland (18-19°C).
In the first ten days of August, the warmest areas were in the southern Wielkopolska Lowlands (18-19°C). In other areas of Poland the air temperature was slightly lower at 17-18°C.
Precipitation in June was very diverse, ranging from a very low (10-25 mm) in the Wielkopolska, Dolno Śląskie regions, Gdańsk Coastlands, northern Mazowiecka Lowlands, Przedborski Uplands and the Nida Basin, where it accounted for 50-70% of the long-term norm, subsequently high in the south-eastern and southern parts of the country, where it ranged from 50 to 120 mm (100-150% of the norm).
In July, the rainfall was very heavy over a large area of the country. The greatest rainfall occurred in the east and in a narrow strip on the western edge of Poland, from 160 to 300 mm. Smaller, but also high rainfall, from 100 to 160 mm occurred in the rest of the country.
