Communication report regarding the incidences of drought conditions in Poland

Year: 2009; period: 07 (1.VI - 31.VII)

The agricultural drought risk assessment in the seventh reporting period: winter and spring cereals, maize for grain and for silage, potatoes, sugar beet, hops, tobacco, vegetables, trees and fruit bushes, strawberries and leguminous crops.

In the seventh reporting period, i.e. from 1 June to 31 July 2009, drought conditions have not occurred in Poland. Climatic water balance values (CWB) vary between slightly negative or positive. The calculated acceptable values of CWB are considerably higher than the critical values.

Given the present conditions of water for crops in Poland, the country can be divided into three areas: excess, good conditions, or with a slight deficit of water.

A large excess of water is present in the south and east of the country in the voivodeships of: Dolnośląskie, Opolskie, Śląskie, Łódzkie, Małopolskie, Podkarpackie, and part of Podlaskie. The positive water balance in spite of a high air temperature is due to very high precipitation. Such conditions are very conducive to the development of many diseases and pests in agricultural crops.

Most parts of Poland have a good humidity conditions for crops (northern, north-east, and central parts).

Light water deficits, but not showing any risk of drought, are only in the north-western parts of the country.
