Communication report regarding the incidences of drought conditions in Poland
Year: 2009; period: 02 (11.IV - 10.VI)
In accordance to the requirements from the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, IUNG-PIB Pulawy has calculated the climate water balance (KBW) for 3,064 Polish municipalities and identified the current risk of agricultural drought for six species and groups of crops: winter and spring cereals, rape and turnip rape, sugar beet, fruit trees and bushes and strawberries for Poland for the period from 11 April to 10 June 2009.
In the second reporting period i.e. between 11 April to 10 June 2009, drought conditions occurred for fruit trees and shrubs grown on very light soil. The threat of agricultural drought for fruit bushes and trees occurred in the northern part of Cracow-Częstochowa Uplands, and the north-western part of Niecka Nidziańska. The risk of drought is occurring in 1.6% of Polish municipalities (48 municipalities), in the southern part of the Lodzkie voivodeship, in the western part of Świętokrzyskie and north-eastern part of Śląskie, comprising 0.2% of the countries area.
For the other groups and plant species, critical values of CWB have not been exceeded. In the southern, northern, western and eastern parts of Poland, CWB values were significantly higher than the critical values. Favourable weather conditions in Poland in the second half of May and early June resulted in slightly negative CWB values. Good weather conditions resulted primarily from the occurrence of high precipitation, which greatly exceeding the long average value, mitigating the effects of continued unfavourable meteorological conditions that occurred in April.
