Communication report regarding the incidences of drought conditions in Poland

Year: 2009; period: 05 (11.V - 10.VII)

IUNG-PIB Puławy has calculated the climate water balance (CWB) for the period 11 May - 10 July 2009 for Polish municipalities in 3064 and identified the current status of agricultural drought risk for the following crops: winter and spring cereals, maize for grain and for silage, rape and turnip rape, potato, sugar beet, hops, tobacco, vegetables, trees and fruit bushes, strawberries and leguminous crops.

In the fifth reporting period, i.e. from 11 May to 10 July 2009, drought conditions have not occurred in Poland. Climatic water balance values (CWB), were slightly negative or positive. CWB values for those crops are much higher than the critical values.

Slightly negative CWB values, showing no risk of agricultural drought, occurred only in the north of the country. In the rest of the Poland the CWB values were positive, while in the south were high, even very high.

Currently, there was no problems related to water deficit for crops, while there are due to excess of water. In many localities in the south of the country in recent sixty day period, precipitation was over 300 mm and in some areas even more than 400 mm. Precipitation was significantly higher than the values of the long term average from 100 to 150% or even 200. Still particularly large excess of water present in the southern parts of voivoideship: Dolnośląskie, Śląskie, Małopolskie and Podkarpackie.
